Course Overview
The Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy is designed to advance the knowledge and practical skills of qualified Level 3 Sports Massage Therapists, enabling them to work confidently and competently at a higher professional level. This course focuses on developing advanced techniques and a deeper understanding of anatomy, physiology, and soft tissue dysfunction to enhance client performance, aid recovery, and support injury rehabilitation.
Learners will gain hands-on experience in conducting detailed subjective and objective client assessments, planning and delivering advanced sports massage treatments, and applying specialist techniques to manage and prevent injury. The course combines theoretical learning with practical workshops, ensuring learners can apply their knowledge safely and effectively within professional practice.
Training is delivered flexibly through a blend of remote study and in-person workshops at our Barnsley facility, with both full-time and part-time options available. On successful completion, learners will achieve a nationally recognised qualification that demonstrates their ability to assess, plan, and treat clients across a range of sporting and clinical environments.

Course Content
The Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy builds on the foundation of Level 3 knowledge, advancing learners’ understanding of assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation techniques to manage and prevent soft tissue dysfunction. The course is structured around three mandatory units that combine in-depth theory with extensive practical training.

Conducting Subjective and Objective Assessment – learning how to carry out detailed client consultations and assessments to identify soft tissue dysfunction, monitor progress, and plan effective treatment strategies.

Treatment Modalities to Support Soft Tissue Repair – exploring a range of advanced treatment techniques and modalities to aid recovery and support the healing process.

Providing Sports Massage Techniques to Prevent and Manage Injury – mastering advanced soft tissue and neuromuscular techniques designed to prevent injury, enhance performance, and promote recovery in clients of varying needs and activity levels.
Learners will gain practical experience through real-world application, working on genuine clients and athletes in professional environments. The course also emphasises clinical reasoning, treatment planning, and maintaining the highest professional standards in client care.
Assessment Type
Learners will be assessed through a blend of theoretical and practical methods to ensure competence in both knowledge and application. Assessment components include a written theory exam, worksheets, and five observed treatment sessions, where learners will demonstrate their ability to assess clients, plan treatments, and apply advanced massage techniques effectively.
Throughout the course, learners will build a portfolio of evidence showcasing their understanding of anatomy, physiology, assessment techniques, and treatment planning. This comprehensive approach ensures graduates are fully prepared to deliver safe, professional, and effective sports massage treatments at an advanced level.
Entry Requirements
Learners must hold the Level 3 in Sports Massage Therapy or equivalent.

On successful completion of the Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy, learners will be fully qualified to work as advanced sports massage practitioners, delivering assessment-led treatments that support recovery, rehabilitation, and performance enhancement.
